Let's Start A Fire: A Personal Reflection on FlintConf

When I find myself talking about my journey with Stoke, be that at a networking event or just in general small talk, I always start with FlintConf. Not only because it was the first big thing I got to work on in this new position; but because of the incredible experience that is facilitating an event like FlintConf - an event where we get to bring together entrepreneurs, freelancers, side hustlers, and other creative professionals to foster community as we learn and grow together. From my first Flint as the newest member of the Stoke team, to helping cultivate an event that means so much to me - the inspiration and dedication surrounding each FlintConf is palpable. This year marks my third FlintConf and I can't help but feel a surge of gratitude and nostalgia for the growth and transformation these years have brought.

When I first stepped into Stoke, I was drawn to its vibrant community and unwavering commitment to inclusivity and support. It was a space where I felt welcomed to be my authentic self, surrounded by individuals who shared the same passion for creativity and entrepreneurship. Despite growing up with parents who both worked for their friends’ small businesses, I was worried my lack of personal experience would mean I didn’t have much to offer in the planning of a conference for entrepreneurs. But there were two of my core beliefs I could pull from: we should all be lifelong learners, and we thrive better together.

As luck would have it, FlintConf embodied these values to a tee. Bringing together entrepreneurs, creatives, and aspiring business owners from diverse backgrounds, the conference served as a beacon of inspiration and empowerment. Although I played mainly a supporting role for FlintConf 2022, finding myself in a room full of creatives who were eager to learn and dedicated to growing something in Denton had me immediately enthralled. Denton often gets overlooked as just a college town - I myself moved here to attend UNT - but it’s home to a vibrant small business community, a collective of artists, musicians, and so much more.

From that point on, it was all I could see. There is something here to cultivate; a fount of knowledge and innovation. And I was lucky enough to be in a position to help.

One of the most significant lessons I've learned through my time working on FlintConf is the importance of leveraging available resources to fuel growth and success. Whether it's connecting with like-minded individuals during lunch or drawing inspiration from insightful speakers, FlintConf has been a treasure trove of knowledge and networking opportunities. Through the first two conferences I attended, I had the honor to meet other self-taught graphic designers, fellow creatives hesitant to call themselves artists, and plenty of people who were just looking to expand their skills - just like I always am.

While freelancing has always interested me, I’ve never felt that I possessed the entrepreneurial spirit that seems so prevalent in Stoke’s community. But, FlintConf caters to aspiring entrepreneurs and side hustlers on top of those already in the game. It’s always eye-opening to find others in the same boat as you. That’s something I love about this event. Flint has played a crucial role in my professional development, providing me with the confidence and skills needed to flourish, not only in my position at Stoke but in my personal pursuits as well. From learning about effective marketing strategies to honing my design skills through web and print development projects, FlintConf has been instrumental in shaping my journey as a creative entrepreneur.

But perhaps the most valuable thing one gets out of attending Flint is the power of community and collaboration. FlintConf isn’t just a conference; it's a testament to the strength of collective effort and the transformative impact it can have on individuals and businesses alike. Not even just in our lovely little Denton, but North Texas and beyond. I’ve witnessed so many connections be made at our events and it never ceases to amaze me how entrepreneurs show up to support one another.

As I look forward to this years’ event, I am filled with excitement for the continued growth of FlintConf. And as a proud member of the Stoke team and greater community, I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to its mission of fostering a thriving independent and creative economy in Denton.

So here's to Stoke, FlintConf, and the countless opportunities for growth and connection they bring. May we continue to learn, evolve, and inspire each other to reach new heights of success. See you at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center on May 8th for FlintConf 2024!
