During this season of gratitude, giving, and coming together with family, friends, and neighbors, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the small business community in Denton and how shopping small really helps communities thrive.
Shopping small helps support the local economy by keeping a larger fraction of the dollars that you spend within your town. “...For every dollar spent at a small business in the U.S., approximately 67 cents stays in the local community. So when you Shop Small on Small Business Saturday—and all year long—it can help add up to a big impact.”
Opening a small business and remaining open takes a lot of passion, determination, and dedication. Entrepreneurs who are small business owners grow differently from entrepreneurs who lead high-growth startups, and their impact can be felt in the community in different, positive ways as well. Let’s continue to inspire the aspiring, and support them with our actions.
The Shop Small Movement
Shop Small Saturday began as an initiative to help grow local economies and support local businesses and entrepreneurs. American Express started Small Business Saturday in 2010 (you can see the evolution of the Small Business Saturday -> Shop Small logo here) to support small businesses and communities across the country. Eventually, their efforts grew into the Shop Small Movement, catching the attention of local and regional government and propelling the Senate to pass a resolution in 2011 in support of Small Business Saturday.
Shopping locally and at small businesses offers you and the community a number of benefits. In a study by Civic Economics, “48% of each purchase at local independent businesses was recirculated locally, compared to less than 14 percent of purchases at chain stores.”
You’ll find unique, one-of-a-kind products, carefully crafted by a local maker. At a small business, you’re more likely to be cared for and helped by the business owner herself, rather than walking into a big box store and feeling overwhelmed by the fluorescent lights and exhaustive inventory.

Shop Small Saturday Selfie Contest
“During Shop Small Saturday, certain locations will feature a Selfie Station, where customers are encouraged to take selfies within the business, tag the business, and post the image to Facebook or Instagram with the hashtag “ #ShopSmallDenton.” It is IMPORTANT to make your post public. When customers complete this fun, simple process, they are automatically entered to win our Grand Prize! We will announce the winner of said prize on Sunday once we are able to count up all of the participating submissions!
